Kataca blends their unique perspectives on music and improvisation to create a modern and unique sound. Kataca appeared at the opening of Perth Jazz Festival in November 2021 and in June 2022 released an album with collaborator, Alana Macpherson, under the name of Carlton/Macpherson/Pass/Valenti. Since then, they have written new music and arrangements for their York Jazz Festival appearance, showcasing the talents of each player and the possibilities of this band format. Expect to hear beautiful melodies, driving ostinatos, changing time signatures and a jazz realisation of a local indie rock tune.

Kataca is a new chordless trio project which comprises renowned Perth/Boorloo musicians, Jessica Carlton on trumpet, Kate Pass on bass and Talya Valenti on drums. Jessica Carlton has been a nominee for the prestigious Freedman Fellowship and Bell Awards, has led her own project at jazz festivals Australiawide and won the Monash jazz prize in 2014, subsequently releasing her debut album ‘Not Alone’. WAM award-winning Kate Pass is known as a prominent side person, and also the band leader of the Kohesia Ensemble, and has performed all over the world including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Singapore Jazz Festival and WOMADelaide. Talya Valenti has toured worldwide as a session drummer, won the WAM drummer of the year award in 2019 and 2020, and is known for her contribution to original jazz and rock projects. All three band members are also educators who have taught in the Young Women in Jazz program, Girls Rock! and at WAAPA.
